Grace Filled Marriage :: Quote of the Day :: August 15
Grace doesn’t add up. This probably explains why most couples shy away from making grace the default mode of their relationships. It’s counter-intuitive. Intimidating too. Grace is so…selfless. We prefer the simple math behind the cause/effect dynamic within relationships. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. You nick my car; I’ll burn down your garage. Sometimes we can’t help but double-down on payback if what we lost was close to our heart. Human math works like that. It assumes the right to add on to our spouse’s bar tab for pain, suffering, or stupidity. For instance, if you take something that wasn’t yours to take, like your spouse’s dreams for the future, your spouse feels justified in holding you in debt…indefinitely. “it’s only fair,” they say.
