HomeWords – Summer 2008

I knew this day was coming. It was inevitable. But it doesn’t make it any easier. Our youngest child, Colt, is graduating from high school. No more science projects, book reports, school plays, talent competitions, or Friday night lights of football. The after-school crowd will now be dispersed across the country, the grocery bill will probably go down, and my sideline access to the latest romances and break ups will disappear. I have loved the 23 year journey through the public schools with all of our children. Their teachers have been my daily allies in teaching them reading, writing, arithmetic and consequences. God has provided many opportunities for them and me to grow in our faith and to reach out to others with God’s love. It’s kind of like getting to the conclusion of an incredible book and wishing it didn’t end on the next page. Yes, there will be many more adventures ahead for me – college graduations, weddings, more grandchildren, more time with Tim, maybe more time for myself. But for now, I will be saying good bye to my day job, one that I have loved and one that is rich with memories and accomplishments. It’s going to take a little time to get used to it, but in the meantime, I plan to enjoy these summer days with Colt before he heads to college and cherish every late night chat, every “Mom, what do you have to eat?”, every laugh, and every hug.
