On the Job Training

I think I could make a pretty good case for hiring a woman who has been a Mom for just about any job out there.   When I hear about an interviewer who says to a Mom “I see that you’ve been out of the work force raising your children for the past 15 years. What experience did you have before that time that would qualify you to do this job?”; I want to shake them.   Just like a soldier coming off the battlefield with extraordinary skills, quick thinking and invaluable experience far surpasses most “trained” applicants, a woman who has managed a home and raised human beings has more on the job training than most highly educated and trained candidates.   A Mom has the most creative (demanding) job in the world. It involves: taste, fashion, decorating, recreation, education, transportation, psychology, romance, cuisine, designing, literature, medicine, handicraft, art, horticulture, economics, government, community relations, pediatrics, geriatrics, entertainment, maintenance, purchasing, direct mail, law, accounting, religion, energy and management.   She’s highly skilled as a negotiator, diplomat, spy, contortionist, EMT, short order chef, laundress, administrator, magician and politician (just to name a few). Moms also have vast experience in motivating, correcting and scaring the daylights out of those in her purview (a skill that can come in handy in many work situations).   So Moms, next time you’re holding a toddler on your hip, extracting a five year old’s head from the staircase rails and doing a booty check on your teenage daughter’s shorts as she leaves for school, hang in there. Don’t forget that you’re in training for the next season of your life!! And more than likely, that might be a paying gig.   Here’s to women everywhere and their contribution to our lives, Love, Darcy
